Cancer Screening Tests for Early Detection: What You Need to Know

🎯 “What tests or screenings can detect cancer early?”

🩺 “When it comes to cancer, early detection can make all the difference in treatment of caners. Let’s see some important screening tests that help detect cancer in its earliest stages.

👩‍⚕️ For women:

·       To diagnose breast cancer - A mammogram is recommended every 1–2 years after the age 40. Those with a family history may need to start earlier. Monthly self-breast examination also helps identify any unusual lumps.

·       The Pap smear and HPV DNA test are excellent tools to detect precancerous changes for cervical cancers. Ideally done every 3 years after the age of 25.

·       There’s no single reliable screening test to diagnose ovarian cancer, but pelvic examinations and ultrasound can be helpful in high-risk cases.

🧔‍⚕️ For men:

·       The PSA blood test and digital rectal examination after age 50 — or earlier for those with a family history of prostate cancer are key to detecting prostate cancers early.

·       For smokers or ex-smokers, a low-dose CT scan can identify small nodules in lungs to detect lung cancer before symptoms appear.

·       Regular oral cavity examination — especially for those using tobacco or betel nut can detect oral cancer early.

·       A colonoscopy every 10 years, or a stool test for occult blood after age of 45, helps identify early lesions for colorectal cancers in both men and women

🧬 Regular health check-ups, especially after 40, are one of the simplest yet most effective ways to detect cancers if any.”
