History of ADHD
The first precise description of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in English clinical literature were by Ireland [1877] and Still [1902] who recommended educational and psychotherapy measures to treat the illness especially a well-structured approach to the patient who was encouraged to adapt conventional rules of social interactions.
Current problems
In pediatric practice ADHD are most common serious psychological problems prompting parents to seek help for their children. Ability to concentrate and pay attention is the foundation of all learning and thinking and hence the suffering of these children and their families is often considerable.
What is ADHD?
It is a combination of attention deficit and impulsivity [hyperactivity or passivity]. Mainly in ADHD there is a problem with perception – sight, hearing, touch, balance, proprioception, [awareness of position and movement of the body] smell and taste.
The problem is the processing of the stimuli in the brain. These stimuli might be diminished or absent so that the patient is flooded with stimuli or the processing of incoming stimuli may be poor due to inadequate coordination in the brain.
As per WHO this disturbance begins before 6 years of age and must last for 6 months before conclusive diagnosis. Neurological and neuropsychological examination is required to establish the diagnosis.
Conventional treatment
Treatment consists of educational and psychotherapy measures with increasing intake of stimulants which help to temporarily diffuse the situation. These stimulants are derivatives of amphetamines and therefore subject to narcotics legislation in most countries.
Homoeopathy has huge scope in treating this particular condition. It requires detailed case taking which deals with understanding the perception symptoms, the past and family history, food cravings aversions, thirst, reaction to heat and cold temperatures, sleep position, sweating patterns etc, fears dreams and temperament of the child. All these factors together help a homoeopath to arrive at the right prescription. Approximate time to see some shift would be somewhere between 2-4 months and for long lasting change in behavior would be somewhere between 1-2 years of regular homeopathic treatment.
