Why knowing name of your homeopathic remedy isn't always helpful

Updated: Jul 22, 2025

If you’re exploring homeopathy, you might be curious—or even concerned—about why your homeopath sometimes does not share the name of the remedy they prescribe. It’s a common question among patients, where information is readily accessible and patients are used to knowing the exact medicines they take.

Here’s the important truth: Homeopathic remedies are prescribed based on the unique symptoms and overall picture of each individual—not simply on the name of a disease or diagnosis. This is a fundamental principle that has been practiced and verified by homeopaths for over 200 years.

The Individualized Approach in Homeopathy

Even if two people share the same medical diagnosis—for example, rheumatoid arthritis or urticaria—their symptoms and experiences will almost always differ. One patient may have specific emotional triggers, peculiar physical symptoms, or different patterns of aggravation and amelioration compared to the other.

A skilled homeopath carefully analyzes these individual differences to select the remedy that best fits the patient as a whole person. This personalized approach is why two people with the same diagnosis may receive entirely different remedies.

Why Knowing the Remedy Name Can Sometimes Hinder Your Healing

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to look up remedies online. While it’s natural to want to learn more, this can sometimes unintentionally interfere with your healing process. Here’s why:

Homeopathic remedies contain hundreds of possible symptoms. A single remedy, like Phosphorus, might list over 200 symptoms, ranging from craving salty foods and left-sided ailments, to restlessness, fear of thunderstorms, and sensitivity to cold.

Your homeopath chooses the remedy because it matches your specific symptoms, not because you have every single symptom listed for that remedy.

If you read all the symptoms of your remedy, you might think, “I don’t have these symptoms, so maybe this remedy is wrong.” This can create doubt, even if the remedy is actually the best match for your case.

During follow-up appointments, patients who know the remedy name may unconsciously alter how they report symptoms—either minimizing improvements or exaggerating problems—because they have preconceived ideas about the remedy. This can confuse your homeopath and make it harder to adjust treatment accurately.

Why Self-Prescribing or Sharing Remedies Can Be Risky

Another common issue occurs when patients feel better after taking a remedy and then recommend the same remedy to friends or family with the same diagnosis. For example, if a patient with rheumatoid arthritis is helped by Calcarea Carbonica, they might suggest the same remedy to others with rheumatoid arthritis.

However, this goes against the core philosophy of homeopathy. Remedies are highly individualized; what works for one person may not work for another, even if they have the same disease. Self-prescribing or sharing remedies without proper case evaluation can lead to ineffective treatment—or worse, confusion about homeopathy’s effectiveness.

Trust the Process — Trust Your Homeopath

Homeopathy’s strength lies in its individualized, holistic approach. It requires trust—trust that your homeopath is carefully selecting and adjusting remedies based on your unique symptoms and response to treatment.

While it may feel unsettling at first not to know the exact name of your remedy, remember: it is done with your best interests in mind, to optimize your healing journey.

If you ever have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to discuss them openly with your homeopath. A good practitioner will always support your understanding and comfort with the treatment process. Trust the expertise and individualized care of your homeopath to guide you toward better health.
