Understanding the Right Approach to Healthcare – Dr Devang Shah MD [Hom]

Understanding the Right Approach to Healthcare – Dr Devang Shah MD [Hom]

There is an interesting tendency among some patients: one acute illness does not respond to Homoeopathy, and suddenly they conclude, “Homoeopathy doesn’t work.”

What is often forgotten are all the other times when Homoeopathy may have helped them or their child through health problems. One difficult episode can overshadow many positive experiences.

Interestingly, we often apply a very different standard to modern medicine.

If a problem recurs every month, many people are comfortable taking medication each time. The symptoms return; another pill is taken. This continues until perhaps the medicine no longer provides the desired relief. It is then that people may start looking for a more holistic or long-term solution.

Shouldn’t healthcare be about something more than simply treating the next symptom?

One failure should not erase every success

Homoeopathy, like every form of treatment, will not be successful in every situation.

As practitioners, we need to be honest about that. If a patient is not improving, the case needs to be reassessed, and appropriate medical care should be sought when required.

But patients too can benefit from looking at their experiences in perspective.

If ten episodes improved with a particular approach and one did not, should that one episode define the entire experience?

Perhaps not.

It reminds me of an old saying about the life of a Homoeopath:

“A Homoeopath is like a goalkeeper. People forget the goals he saved, but remember the goals he missed.”

Perhaps this is true of healthcare in general.

We tend to remember what went wrong more vividly than what went right.

The need for awareness

Unfortunately, many people are still unaware of the scope—and the limitations—of holistic approaches to health.

The answer is not to create a battle between Homoeopathy, Ayurveda and modern medicine.

It is to create awareness, responsible choices and better healthcare.

Every system has its place. Every patient is different. And sometimes the best decision is to combine approaches appropriately under qualified professional guidance.

At the end of the day, healthcare should not be about proving which system is superior.

It should be about one simple question:

“What is best for this patient, at this time?”

If this conversation encourages people to think about health more holistically, make informed choices and seek appropriate treatment when needed, then it has achieved its purpose.

The real goal should be the right treatment for the right patient at the right time.

A healthy lifestyle, good nutrition, adequate sleep, exercise and appropriate care can support the body's natural ability to maintain health. At the same time, we should never delay necessary medical treatment simply because we want to follow a particular philosophy of healthcare.

Because ultimately, better health—not winning an argument between medical systems—should be the goal.
